It’s that time of the year again! Eid al-Adha is the second major Muslim festival after Eid al Fitr, which marks the end of Ramadan, the month of fasting.
The memes are rolling out, hurr being did, hennas painted and our best clothes being ironed for #EidSlayyy. Whilst the festivities are ongoing, it is important to know and reflect on the purpose of the season. It is celebrated to commemorate the willingness of Ibrahim (also known as Abraham) to obey Allah’s command to sacrifice his son, Ismail.
I read an insightful article by Yusef Vanderkimpen (Read here). He highlighted two major lessons to take away from this story. The first is “obedience”. Ibrahim (pbuh) had waited for years until God blessed him and his wife, Hajar with a son at age 86. Allah asked him to sacrifice this miracle son as a test yet he obeyed willingly. Our tests can come in different forms and it can be soooo uncomfortable. We lose our jobs, a loved one or whatever forbearance it may be, obedience is key.
The second lesson is that for every test comes a reward. Ibrahim had set out to sacrifice his son and just at the last minute, Allah provided him a ram (which we kill every year in commemoration). This was the reward for his obedience. Be merry and ponder on this.
Moving further away, I think it is noteworthy that our Christian friends suddenly want to check up on us. We see you!😂
Dear Christian buds, say hi to Mariam and Abdul today. You just might be lucky!
PS: Pls say “Eid Mubarak” or “Happy Sallah” not “Happy Eid Mubarak”. May you not be “Happy Merry Christmas-ed” on December 25th.
I hope you have a wonderful celebration regardless of the pandemic.
